The on line help have disconneted me many a time, and the telephone help has even hung up on me. and each one i talked to told me to do something different about the same problem. I felt like i was just going in circles, no one seemed to be a ble to help me with it at all. then i sent a letter to home office and got a phone call saying that they can only help with this problem and that one. I even called the mfgs help line on the phone and got hung up with. How can a tech help any one, when they dont know anything about Vista.? I have been on line with the mfg about every other day up until a month ago., about other problems i have been having with Vista. How do i even know it is defragging at all?

I purchased vista home premium in april 07, and im very very unhappy and disappointed with it. I would also like to see what is happening when i defrag. I wish MS would implement similar features into Vista, but for now, I am happy with my purchase.

DK Pro shows me exactly what it is doing, its really simple to use, and I don't even have to worry about scheduling.I let it run in the background auto-defrag mode, and let it do its thing while I am working on my documents. $50. I don't regret it one bit- its a great bit of software. No more wrestling with the rubbish vista defragger. So in a fit of exasperation, I gave up and got the Diskeeper Pro for approx. The Vista defragger took all of eternity to defrag my single 80 GB drive, had quirky scheduling, and I could not defrag the MFT or do system file defrags either. I create/edit/delete large files very frequently on my home laptop, and fragmentation was becoming an irritating problem with slowdowns if I didnt defrag after a few days of work. However, in my case, I didn't have much of an option. I note the reluctance to use third party software, and I totally agree. It's not good if you are forced to spend more money on software, after already shelling out $$ for Vista. Unfortunately, there are not statistics other than "Success/Fail" type of information. Defrag can be managed through the Task Scheduler, or through the Defrag interface (where you can run scheduler or defrag).

Except for Task Scheduler, of course, which is where you would want to go to check on the scheduled tasks - such as a scheduled or manually run Defrag. You can access pretty much any Administrative Tool you need from there. Use the Vista Perfermance Improvement tools found in the Control Panel - Such as Defrag, Disk Cleaner, etc.Īnd the Control Panel is your friend.

Turn off the Windows Visual Effects (Control Panel ~> Advanced Options ~> Performance ) - I left on the last option, as this is the one that gives Vista a pretty GUI.Ħ.

Set your paging file to be static, so it is always the same size (not constantly growing and shrinking)ģ. Turn Hardare Acceleration all the way UPĢ. I thought Ultimate would correct this, but no, it does not! FYI - There are a few Performance Enhancements that should always be completed on a new Windows Installation:ġ. Although, I thought that Vista (I use Ultimate) was pretty easy to navigate and find stuff, its just once you start using the Tools you have grown so fond of in XP & 2K3 Server, the experience is way dumbed down - for the less than average end-user. Speaking of Processes.why on Earth do you need 80 Services by Default? I mean, that is a bit ridiculous.
